(23 March 2010)

Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC), the master developer of Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi, welcomed H.E. Saqr Gobash, Minister of Labour, H.E. Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi, UAE Minister of Foreign Trade, high profile dignitaries and diplomats to Saadiyat Island for a progress development update and a tour of the Saadiyat Construction Village.

The island tour included visits to the Saadiyat Construction Village which is now home to more than 4,500 construction workers who work on various development projects across the island, and to the recently launched Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, an 18-hole championship golf course. Also, guests were briefed on the construction progress of the world-class museums which will open in 2013 in the Saadiyat Island Cultural District.

Welcoming the tour delegation, Mubarak Al Muhairi, Managing Director of TDIC, said: "Saadiyat Island is TDIC’s flagship project and we are privileged to host such esteemed guests and provide them with an update on the developments we have made on the island, as we continue to deliver all projects on schedule." "We are proud of the Saadiyat Construction Village as a regional benchmark for the level of housing and associated facilities provided for construction workers across the UAE," concluded Al Muhairi.

The Saadiyat Island Construction Village is a 21 hectare site, located on the island’s south coast which offers three types of accommodation blocks ranging from two to six bedrooms. The accommodation blocks are built around a communal recreational facility, that includes a dining hall, library, games room, Internet cafe, supermarket, gymnasium and TV rooms. When the landscaping is completed in June 2010, the Saadiyat Construction Village will also offer a four hectare, floodlit, multi-purpose grassed sports oval.

Following the tour, Minister Gobash, commented: "We are pleased that developers are paying increased attention to the quality of life for the labour force and was pleased to tour Saadiyat Construction Village, which is regarded to be in full compliance with labour accommodation standards that was recently passed by the UAE government. We believe this facility will encourage many other developers to follow suit, and strive to achieve similar standards." The design of the Saadiyat Construction Village has been determined by TDIC’s vision to complete a facility with strict sustainability guidelines, considering environmental aspects in relation to the site’s location and green building designs as well as social aspects related to the health and welfare of its workforce.

The guests’ visit to the Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, showcased plans and renderings for the Saadiyat Beach Clubhouse, designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry and to be opened by 2012. Guests also received updates about the progress of the nine five-star hotels to line Saadiyat Beach, several of which are already under construction and are set to open from next year.

A detailed construction update on the museums being built on Saadiyat Island Cultural District was also provided during the tour.

Saadiyat Island is at the forefront of Abu Dhabi’s vision to become a global capital city and will host the largest concentration of cultural museums in the world by its completion in 2013. Numerous projects are currently under construction across the Saadiyat Island, including the Cultural District and all developments are progressing as per the schedule.
