’It’s The Best’ And It’s Just Seven Days Away! Global Superfans Primed For Return Of Mubadala World Tennis Championship
(12 December 2019)
Draw throws up potential repeat of 2019 US Open final between Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev

The Mubadala World Tennis Championship is just seven days away and tournament superfans from around the world are ready to make their annual return to Abu Dhabi for the “event of the year” from 19 – 21 December at Abu Dhabi’s International Tennis Centre, Zayed Sports City.

With five of the world’s top 10 male players: World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, No. 2 Novak Djokovic, World No. 5 Daniil Medvedev, World No. 6 Stefanos Tsitsipas and No. 10 Gael Monfils, plus  2017 Next Gen ATP Finals winner Hyeon Chung, confirmed, this year’s line-up is one of the strongest in the event’s history. The championship has also attracted Maria Sharapova, five-time Grand Slams, and Australian Fed Cup finalist Ajla Tomljanovic.

The draw has served up some mouth-watering clashes including a potential 2019 US Open final repeat between world No. 1 Rafael Nadal and world No. 5 Daniil Medvedev on Day 2. Should Medvedev beat Hyeon Chung in their quarter-final on Day 1 (match on court not before 6pm) he will take on Nadal in the last four on Friday 20 December, with Nadal earning a bye through to the semi-finals as the top-ranked player.

In the other half of the draw, defending champion Novak Djokovic will face the winner of the Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Gael Monfils match, the tournament opener which gets under way at 4pm on Thursday 19 December.

Sharapova and Tomljanovic meanwhile, will go head-to-head in a winner-takes-all women’s match at circa 8pm on Day 1. The tennis talent doesn’t stop there however, and you can expect to see several former Grand Slam winners-turned coaches and a famous tennis love match.

Such high-octane, top-quality tennis, unique festival atmosphere, the chance to see the sport’s elite up close and the off-court fun in the village, continue to be a huge draw for spectators from the UAE and beyond.

“This is the event of the year! If you haven’t booked your tickets, now is the time to do it,” said Bev Gribble, who will be making her 10th visit from South Africa for the three-day spectacle.

“The very first time I came to Abu Dhabi for the tournament, I just fell in love with the city and the tournament. The organisation is fantastic, the stadium is perfectly intimate, and all the seats have excellent views of the thrilling on-court action. It has a very infectious atmosphere and is a great family experience with plenty to keep the kids occupied.”

Fellow superfan Amanda Dale, who will once again make the journey from the United Kingdom, is hoping to treat herself to a special birthday gift at this year’s championship.

“I attend the championship every year and the friendliness of the tournament is very special. The level of intimacy with the players, the opportunity to watch them practice and compete from close quarters is exceptional,” said Dale.

“I have autographs of a lot of the top tennis players in the world, but I have always missed out on Rafael Nadal. This year, getting Rafa’s autograph would be a wonderful gift for myself on my birthday,” she added.

Amongst the domestic Mubadala World Tennis Championship fan club is Nour Aljaadi, an Abu Dhabi resident who says the championship and its festival atmosphere highlights the very best of the UAE capital’s hospitality and entertainment offering.

“Watching elite tennis in Abu Dhabi is a very pleasant experience and something that all of us look forward to every year. The Championship is a great way to watch world-class tennis players live and to showcase the many wonderful experiences Abu Dhabi offers,” she said.
