(22 October 2016)
The Strata Stage of the Abu Dhabi Tour takes places on October 22nd as the “Queen stage” of the 2016 Abu Dhabi Tour it will, in all probability, decide General Classification for the race thanks to the 11km final climb of Jabel Hafeet on gradients that average 7.5% and touch 12%. This massive stage route will start inside Al Ain city before following roads out into the desert and cross the Green Mubazzarah oasis before starting the final ascent of Jabel Hafeet.
Beyond the Abu Dhabi Tour race, Mubadala and Abu Dhabi Sports Council have worked in partnership to allow the Abu Dhabi Tour’s educational staff as they visited four different schools in recent weeks to showcase hour-long cycling classes. International Community School, Al Mamoura School, Emirates National School (Abu Dhabi City) and Emirates National School (Mohamed Bin Zayed City) all held sessions, allowing Abu Dhabi Tour staff to reach 10 classes with a total 471 junior attendees.
This new educational program has been developed by Abu Dhabi Tour’s staff to familiarise students with the history of the bicycle, the benefits of cycling and most importantly road safety. At the end of each class all students were invited to create a cycling-related painting or drawing. All their artwork will be displayed in the Kids’ Area at the Final Stage, each with a number corresponding to an invitation card given to the kids, who, with their parents, will be encouraged to attend the Abu Dhabi Tour’s final stage and closing event on 23rd October. There they will be able to enter a raffle to win a child’s bike.
His Excellency Aref Al Awani, ADSC’s General Secretary, said: “This is one of our most important partnerships and projects. While the focus is on the fans and spectators of the Abu Dhabi Tour, we never forget our vision: building a new generation of cycling lovers. These kind of initiatives are the best way to spread cycling culture here in the UAE."
