ENEC Welcomes Visit From Republic Of Korea Minister To Barakah
(24 January 2014)

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) today hosted Minister Yoon Sang-jick of the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy (MOTIE) of the Republic of Korea at Barakah in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi, the site of the UAE’s peaceful nuclear energy program.

The visit was an opportunity for the minister to witness the construction progress that has been made and further strengthen the bilateral relations between Republic of Korea and the UAE. In 2009, ENEC awarded the Prime Contract to construct the UAE’s first nuclear energy plants to a consortium led by the Korean Electric Power Company (KEPCO), one of the world leaders in safety, plant reliability and efficiency.

“We are very pleased to welcome Minister Yoon to the Barakah site where we have made significant progress towards achieving our plans for the development of a safe, secure and efficient nuclear energy program in partnership with KEPCO,” said Chief Executive Officer of ENEC, Mr. Mohamed Al Hammadi. “We remain on schedule to deliver the first plant in 2017 and we look forward to continuing our work together to ensure the successful delivery of the project.”

ENEC recently announced the achievement of a milestone for Barakah Unit 1, with the completion of the fabrication and installation of the Containment Liner Plate (CLP) in the Reactor Containment Building. Commercial operations for Unit 1 are set to commence in 2017, subject to regulatory approvals.
Barakah Unit 2 is also well under way and with the plant scheduled to enter commercial operation in 2018, pending regulatory approval. ENEC is on track to break ground for the third plant later this year and will apply for an Operating License for Units 1 and 2 in 2015.

With four plants operational by 2020, nuclear energy will deliver up to a quarter of the UAE’s electricity needs, while saving up to 12 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year.
