(21 November 2013)
In September 2012 the four Surgical Royal Colleges of the UK & Ireland (Edinburgh, England, Glasgow & Ireland) announced their intention to introduce a new suite of examinations for the international surgical community to be known as the Joint Surgical Colleges Fellowship Examinations (JSCFE).
General Surgery is the first specialty to go live and the first examinations to be held anywhere in the world will be held in the UAE over the next three days (21‐23 November 2013) thanks to a partnership with Tawam Hospital, Ain Ain Hospital and the UAEU College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS). Successful completion of the examination will allow candidates to apply for election to the Fellowship of any of the four Surgical Royal Colleges.
The examinations will be held across three sites. United Arab Emirates University will host the Oral Examinations on Friday 22 November 2013 and Al Ain Hospital and Tawam Hospital will host the Clinical Examinations on Saturday 23 November 2013.
Mr Tim Graham, Cardiac Surgeon and Chair of JSCFE Committee, on behalf of the Surgical Royal Colleges says: “College Fellows, all senior surgeons from the UK and Ireland and the wider international community have joined together to deliver an examination with the purpose of promoting surgical excellence worldwide. We would like to thank Professor Frank Branicki, Professor and Chair, Department of Surgery, UAEU and his team in Al Ain who will host the very first of these examinations and believe that the standards of excellence in surgery here in the UAE will benefit as a result.”
Dr Sulaiman Al Hammadi, Vice Dean of CMHS says: “The United Arab Emirates University is committed to excellence in the training and assessment of doctors in the service of communities. The UAEU is pleased to participate in this initiative of the Surgical Royal Colleges which will enhance the quality of surgical care provided to patients in this region and elsewhere.”
Stephen Spann, Tawam Hospital CMO said: “We are honoured to be the host for the first wave of examinations from one of the most respected surgical Fellowships in the world. We look forward to all of our successful surgeons joining the elite ranks of these Fellowships in the near future. We believe that these examinations will not only help to enhance the standards of treatment and care we are able to provide for our local communities, but also benefit the surgeons who participate and will have access to knowledge sharing with their peers across the world.”
Dr. Mouza Al Kuwaiti, Al Ain Hospital CMO said: “The Joint Surgical Royal Colleges are globally renowned institutions and an ideal partner for us as we seek to instil the very highest standards in the UAE’s fast evolving medical sector. As a host for the examinations on Saturday 23 November 2013 we look forward to welcoming the best surgical talent to our hospital to test their skills and knowledge at the highest levels.”
Tawam Hospital and Al Ain Hospital are both part of the SEHA Health System and are owned and operated by SEHA, which is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
