Al Hilal Bank Goes ’Dark’ For A Brighter Future In Celebration Of World Environment Day 2013
(4 June 2013)
In addition to switching off the lights, the Bank launches energy-saving PC backgrounds & screensavers

Following the heels of its successful ‘Earth Hour’ campaign last March, Al Hilal Bank has announced that it will continue its sustainability efforts of switching off the lights in its branches and offices after working hours and will add a new green initiative in commemoration of World Environment Day on June 5, 2013. The bank will promote and offer dark-themed backgrounds and screensavers via strategic websites, emailers, Facebook tabs and Twitter links.

Al Hilal Bank’s new initiative is based on the fact that dimmer screens save energy by as much as 20 per cent. Given that the average adult spends 8-14 hours per day in front of a multimedia screen, the simple act of using darker backgrounds or screensavers could thus result in energy savings. Through its online campaigns for its ‘Go dark’ initiative, Al Hilal hopes to encourage more organizations and individuals to support simple actions that protect the environment.

“Al Hilal Bank wants to emphasize the powerful symbolism behind using ‘darkness’ to call for a brighter future. As nations celebrate World Environment Day this year, we will continue switching off the lights in our branches and offices and show that even changing computer habits slightly can reduce energy consumption. The simplest actions, when done by many concerned and committed people, can make a huge difference for the environment,” said Mohammed Jamil Berro, CEO of Al Hilal Bank.

Priding itself as ‘the orange bank that thinks green,’ Abu Dhabi –based Al Hilal Bank executes a ‘Go Green’ strategy that incorporates impactful sustainability initiatives into its annual activities. The bank owns ‘eGrab,’ the world’s first electric-powered mobile banking branch, participates regularly in the Emirates Environmental Group’s ‘Plant A tree’ program, and uses various digital technologies to prevent paper wastage.

World Environment Day is celebrated every year on the 5th of June to raise global awareness on the need to take positive environmental action. It is organized by UNEP - the United Nations Environment Programme. World Environment Day is hosted every year by a different city with a different theme and is marked by an international exposition in the week covering June 5. This year’s event will be held under the theme ‘Think.Eat.Save.’ and will be hosted by Mongolia.
