Masdar was honoured as the recipient of the inaugural ‘Award for Leadership in New Energy’ – an industry recognition created by the Energy Intelligence Group, a leading news and analysis organization. The award recognizes companies working to diversify the energy mix to integrate cleaner, more sustainable sources of power.

The award was presented in London at a conference held by Energy Intelligence and the International Herald Tribune. Accepting the award, Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, chief executive officer of Masdar, underscored the company’s critical role in accelerating the widespread adoption of renewable energy.

“It’s an absolute honour to be recognized by such a distinguished group, and to be selected by our peers in the energy industry,” said Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, chief executive officer of Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s multifaceted renewable energy company. “This award underscores the visible impact Masdar is making around the world. From developing the world’s largest wind farm in the United Kingdom to the largest solar installation in the Middle East, Masdar is moving the industry forward and playing a role in diversifying energy sources in the UAE and around the world.

“As an oil-producing nation we are leveraging our hydrocarbon resources and capitalizing on our deep energy expertise to develop a renewable energy industry,” added. Dr. Al Jaber. “We view this as a natural step forward to support economic growth and diversification, while also extending the UAE’s energy leadership. Masdar is contributing to Abu Dhabi’s transition from a resource-based economy to one based on knowledge and innovation. Moving forward, we will continue to champion the new energy economy, reinforcing the economic, social and environmental benefits of accelerating the adoption of renewable power.”

The award selection process began with a large list of nominees from the Energy Intelligence editorial team. Masdar was chosen by a committee comprised of senior energy executives and government officials that are advisors to Energy Intelligence.

“Masdar is a global pioneer, making investments in large-scale renewable energy and sustainable development,” said Thomas Wallin, executive vice president and editor-in-chief of Energy Intelligence. “Abu Dhabi, as a major oil and gas producer, is strategically looking to the future and playing a major role in diversifying the energy mix. This award recognizes Masdar’s commitment to accelerate the deployment of clean, renewable energy.”

Launched by the Abu Dhabi leadership in 2006, Masdar is contributing to the diversification of Abu Dhabi’s economy and energy sources. Working across the value chain, the company invests in research, clean technology companies and large-scale renewable power projects. Masdar’s signature 100-MW solar power project in Abu Dhabi, Shams 1, is the largest solar project in the Middle East and North Africa and will generate enough electricity to power 20,000 homes. Masdar has also developed projects in the United Kingdom and Spain, while also investing in clean-technology companies across North America, Europe and Asia.

Masdar’s commitment to renewable energy was also recently recognized by the United Nations.

This June, Dr. Al Jaber also received the United Nations’ Champions of the Earth award. Organised by the United Nations Environment Programme, the award honoured Dr. Al Jaber for his positive impact on the environment.
